15-7. Servicing the Clutch Unit.
Rotate the pinion. The pinion gear should rotate
smoothly in one direction, but should not rotate in the
opposite direction. If the starter clutch unit does not
function properly, or the pinion is worn, chipped, or
burred, replace the starter clutch unit.

b. Procedure.
(1) Position the shifter fork in the drive housing and
of the pin should angle away from the housing. The fork
and retainer pin should operate freely after bending the tip
of the pin.
